Spinal cord injuries in Florida

Spinal cord injuries may result from traumatic damage to your spine that affects the nerve fibers that allow for the body to function.  For example, an injury to the lower back can affect nerves controlling the abdomen, legs, bowel and bladder. A severe neck injury can affect arm and hand movement.  Some spinal cord injuries will result in temporary disability where nerve functions can be regenerated and body movement may eventually be restored (like Peyton Manning’s throwing motion is an example). However, severe injuries may result in permanent paralysis, where movement of extremities cannot be restored.

How spinal cord injuries occur

Such injuries commonly result from car and motorcycle accidents, falls or wounds.  They also caused by improper equipment in gyms, falling debris on construction sites and improperly marked swimming pools. In recent years, more football players have suffered spinal cord injuries as a result of increasingly violent collisions from bigger and faster players.

Motorcycle accidents, horseback riding falls and off-road vehicle crashes can cause such injuries as well. Aside from accidents, some diseases (such as polio and spina bifida) may lead to spinal cord damage.

Legal remedies for spinal cord injuries

If you have suffered a spinal cord injury due to someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation for lost wages, pain and suffering, as well as future medical expenses. This is due to the duty of reasonable care owed towards others in many facets of life. For instance, every driver on Florida roads owes a duty to use reasonable care in caring for and operating their vehicle. If a driver breaches this duty by speeding, driving while intoxicated or otherwise driving recklessly, and this breach is the proximate cause in an accident, the offending driver could be held liable.

How a Jacksonville personal injury attorney can help.

While the physical ailments stemming from a spinal cord injury may be obvious, the financial implications from such an injury may not be. In addition to proving how a negligent party breached the duty of care that led to the injury, an experienced personal injury attorney can clearly set forth the amount an injured party will need for future care and rehabilitation.
